symptoms

NIOS.EXE will hang when loading on any machines with over 512MB RAM. This was confirmed with machines that had 640MB and 1GB RAM at two different sites. When RAM was lowered to 512MB, everything was fine.

cause

The code in NIOS had a problem supporting more than about 570MB RAM. The code was changed.

solutions

The latest released version of the DOS/Win client32 should have the NIOS.EXE which should fix this problem. Note that this new NIOS will not support more than about 3GB RAM. The NIOS.EXE dated later than 9/15/97 will work with Win95 DOS as long as EMM386.EXE is not used. EMM386.EXE may not work with DOS? Not using it means that 64k of memory is left out of the picture, but you get approximately 4k of base memory back that EMM386.EXE was loading into. If you already have 512+MB of RAM who cares anyway?
