Pegasus Mail can be instructed to prepare mail messages and pass them to a user-defined task for processing. The user-defined task takes whatever extra steps are required to prepare the message for transmission then either sends it itself, or passes it to another process which can do so. User-defined gateways can be anything from a simple batch file which copies the message to a directory, to a fully-fledged message transport which processes and sends the message. Pegasus Mail learns how to use specific user-defined gateways via definitions created using the PCONFIG configuration utility. Examine the file UDG.TXT supplied with Pegasus Mail for DOS for more information on creating and defining user-defined gateways. * Which versions of Pegasus Mail support user-defined gateways? At present, only the DOS and Windows versions of Pegasus Mail support user-defined gateways. Support is planned in the Macintosh version for sometime in 1995. * Are there any complications running UDGs under Windows? Under Windows, you may have to create a PIF file (using the Windows PIF Editor utility) which specifies that the gateway program can run in the background and that its window should close on termination. The .PIF file should be placed in the same directory as the program. * What user-defined gateways are supplied with Pegasus Mail? In its default form, Pegasus Mail has no user-defined gateways shipped with it. Pegasus Mail's author has, however, created two UDGs which can be retrieved from the principal distribution points. These are PMPOP, a POP3 transport for Pegasus Mail/DOS which is installed as a UDG, and PMREMOTE, a dialup remote access module for Pegasus Mail. See the VERSION.FAQ faq list for more information on current versions and availability of these programs. * What user-defined gateways are available for Pegasus Mail? The following is a partial list of gateways known to be available at the time of writing this FAQ. The information shown has been contributed by the gateway authors or their users and while every effort has been taken to ensure that it is accurate, no responsibility will be accepted for errors or omissions. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Name: Pegasus Mail <> UUPC/extended 1.12b or 1.12j gateway Description: UUPC/extended 1.12b or 1.12j gateway for use on Netware LANs, some support for LANtastic. Supports multiple users, delivery glue from UUPC/extended recognizes PMail autoforwarding addresses, etc. Requirements: Netware 2.x, 3.x, untested on 4.x; UUPC 1.12b or j Price: Free. Some source code included under terms of GNU GPL. Availability: FTP to ftp.ee.und.ac.za, /pub/msdos/uuplan/uuplan10.zip Notes: Owing to PMail and UUPC handling BCC's differently, non-BCC recipients get two copies of BCCed messages. Interfacing method produces a spurious Sender: line in message header, which can be eliminated using a patch to UUPC. In addition to SMTP, KA9Q supports both client and server Telnet, FTP, POP3, Ping, Finger and Hopcheck. KA9Q supports multiple virtual consoles similar to the Novell 3.X servers. KA9Q and Pegasus can be run simultaneously under Windows 3.1. Requirements: Price: Availability: By special arrangement with the author. Notes: G-mail was designed to meet the special needs of the Charles Darwin Research station, and is not currently in a form suitable for general distribution. If there is sufficient interest, I would be willing to produce a free distribution package. Notes: - Contact: Internet: davec@wsti.demon.co.uk -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Name: MastGate Description: Internet gateway which can do mail delivery via UUCP. It uses popular UUCICO low-level from Waffle to do the actual delivery and adds two programs to it: Export will take messages which are spooled by Pmail (so there is no need to run any programs from inside Pmail and it will work fine with WinPmail as well) and prepares them for UUCICO. Import will take incoming mail from UUCICOs spool and deliver it to user mail directories, doing address aliasing and group delivery on the way. The users are sent notification messages about new mail. Most of the features can be enabled/disabled from INI file. MastGate also supports stand-alone operation and non- netware networks and can be used as delivery agent for Mercury if you need Mercury functionality but don't have TCP/IP connection to Internet. Requirements: Any PC and modem will do. Dedicated machine is nice, but not needed - you can run the programs when you need to or even run it in Windows task. Price: Shareware. The registration fee is $25 in cash. Availability: Distributed via single distribution point - send mail to and put command(s) in message body. INDEX will give you a list of files, SEND FILENAME.EXT will send you a file. Notes: MastGate a bit Mercury look-alike, it is basically designed to service one NetWare server. It does not yet recognize Charon/Mercury Internet Autoforwarding information, nor can it send auto-replies. You can run it with Mercury if you have NW3.x or 4.x, tho.
