The files included in this package are utilities for testing
SMS connectivity in a Novell network.
They operate independently of any backup software, and can help
isolate problems with TSAs, SMDRs, and network SPX communications.

To use these files, either use the executable version from a DOS
workstation, or the NLM version at the server console (the file,
smstest.nlm should be copied to your server's \SYSTEM directory.)

Once the command loads the program, you will be asked to select
a SMDR, from the list of those visible to smstest. If you cannot
see a particular server's SMDR, then either it is not loaded, or
there is a problem with communications. Often, if there is a problem,
an SMS error will be reported. You may contact Palindrome tech support
with the error code, but please keep in mind that most SMS NLMs are
 written by Novell.
The next step is to select one of the TSAs that report to the selected
SMDR. Then select a resource. At this point there are several different
options. The one we recommend is to perform a backup. This simulates
a backup of the resource, but does NOT copy to backup hardware. If
there is an SMS problem that happens during a backup, it should also
occur during a simulated backup, and indicate that the problem lies
with the SMS modules, not the backup software.

Many SMS problems can be resolved by updating some of the support NLMs
that SMS modules use: CLIB, TLI, STREAMS, IPXS, and SPXS. There are
also some SPX patches available from Novell that resolve other SMS
 problems.
These fixes, at the time this document was written (10/21/94),
are in the Novell upgrade files; LIBUP3.EXE and STRTL3.EXE,
and are available on Novell's Netwire forum on Compuserve.
They are also available on the Palindrome BBS. For details to
the above mentioned patches, see the readmes included in the
 upgrade files.
Another common SMS problem is out of date TSA or SMDR modules.
Please be certain that you have the versions that shipped with your
Palindrome software, or later, (10/93 - 11/93 dates on the files).
These are also available on the Palindrome BBS.
